The EntreBribe, good marketing or EConomy killer?

Well, I am sure EVERYONE knows about Entrecards new features, and this is exactly why I will not be mentioning said features.

It seems like every single blog I visit has a post regarding it, and its all because Entrecard is running a The EntreBribecontest that will give each and every person who mentions the new features 2,000 EC’s. For now it looks like the bribe marketing is going great as they are getting a ton of backlinks and a ton of exposure, they’re even getting backlinks and exposure from me I guess.

This contest does however raise a question in my mind, with all these instant EC’s being given away, is this going to have bad effects on the value of an EC? Right now advertising on my Entrecard is 256 EC’s, JohnCow.com is currently going for 512 EC’s and there are some blogs that going for over 4096 EC’s. After all these people instantly get 2000 EC’s are the prices of ads going to go through the roof? Entrecard also has a shop where people can sell items and services for EC’s, is this fair for them? Entrecard has created a mini economy based on there EC’s and now they are flooding the market with EC’s to promote there site, what affect will this have on the worth of EC’s?

It is great marketing, but when your giveaway is your own product and you give it away to anyone, it devalues your product a little. Hopefully the influx of new members from this campaign will generate a lot more traffic and quality for the Entrecard community.

    Hey, Graham here.

This promo hardly effects the economy at all. The burn rate is 75%, which means that as soon as these credits get spent one single time, 75% of them are completely gone, leaving only 25% remaining in the accounts of the people whom the advertising was purchased from. When they spend those credits, it is burned by another 75%. So, in two cycles of spending, only 6% of the credits are remaining from the promo. After three cycles of spending, only 1% remains.

People sometimes complain that they only receive 25% of the cost to advertise on their blog, but it is precisely because of this rate that we can hold promos like this without it effecting the economy.

Now, this is not to say that prices may be higher over the next day or two. They certainly will be. My point is simply that a week from today, all of those credits will have been spent two or three times over, and thus completely removed from the economy.

If we started giving away millions of credits then yes, we would have a problem. But giving away a few hundred thousand in a big promotion like this barely even registers on our radar, and we monitor the economy with intensity.

    Graham,

I am throughly impressed by your response! I definitely think its a good promotion and hope that it will bring a lot of new faces to Entrecard as I have started to become quite active in the community and I do like it very much!

It will be interesting to see what happens over the course of the next few days/weeks as people are getting there credits and becoming more active (and maybe frivolous)! ;)

Thank you for your response Graham, and if anyone reading this has not yet signed up for Entrecard, I urge you all to as it is a great community and it does send some quality traffic!

I use entrecard myself on my website, mysitecometrue.com. I am not worried about the value of entrecard credits due to the fact that 2000c introduced a few times is nothing. People get 300ec a day from dropping and some more from drops on them. this is thousands in total introduced every day. It isn’t that much of a difference in my opinion

We must admit that the Entrecard team are a bunch of marketing genuises. We can’t blame them if they’re going all out on the EC based market. It’s their company their promoting in the first place.

Business is business. MArketing is marketing. And people are sure getting hooked on this. I just don’t think their will be any drastic disadvantages (in my opinion).

And oh, I didn’t post about their new features. They already are getting a lot of buzz and I’ll be like a duplicate content maker if I posted one, which would get some Search Engine trouble as I believe…

Great opinion on your part though…

I would prefer if they give some cash rather than EC credits. And still waiting for a program from them where I can make some cash out of their EC.
